A friend of mine just changed my life. Sarah and I have worked in multiple salons together- for those who don’t know, I just recently quit my salon life and am now working freelance full time, as a stylist- and we have tried ALL THE PRODUCTS. Every product claims to be life changing and remarkable. I’ve been consistently happy with a number of product lines, but still hadn’t found that perfect combination for the lived-in, slept-in yet polished hair we all desire… Until Sarah introduced me to minimalist, boutique haircare line, Hairstory. Being a human with color damaged, yet oily hair, I was personally very skeptical about an aloe and oil-based cleanser with such a minimal product line. Until I tried it. And now I will never go back.
Here are a few mega-easy and quick hairstyles I often turn to for myself and for the models I style for shoots.
My man, Michael Gordon ( ex- Bumble & Bumble genius) is the founder and head stylist for Hairstory, so I knew it was a product I could trust. Read the story on their site about how Hairstory came to be and the science behind their staple product, New Wash and it’s product buddies.
>>> NEW WASH + DRESSED UP: SEXY HAIR
Sometimes a babe needs sexy hair. I wear and style mostly vintage and like to keep hair big and 60s when the inspiration strikes. Think Brigitte Bardot, Sharon Tate, and more modern/retro like Adele. For a super simple, foxy look, I washed my hair with New Wash, worked Dressed Up through my hair roots to ends and did a nice-ol-classic blowout with a round brush. I don’t like doing too much styling in one day, so if I’m blowdrying, that’s all it gets that day. New Wash smells amazing and though it was interesting getting used to the lotion consistency, it felt really nice. Dressed up made my hair feel polished, not sticky and still maintained soft movement.
Simple must-haves for bouncy 60s babe hair: New Wash, hot rollers ( mine are old-school Conair ones from my mom’s 80s hair days. They have worked for me for years and I will continue using these ones until they die 🙂 This set from Conair looks like the modern version ) , teasing comb ( this one is vintage from my grandma, but you can find em all over the place- try Sally Beauty), Dressed Up
2nd day hair is my jam. I love the feeling of waking up, fluffing my ‘do and getting out the door ASAP. Due to my oily-ish hair, I typically use lotsa hair powder at my root. With New Wash, I didn’t feel the necessity. That night we went out, like out-OUT. So, I busted out the hot rollers. Hot rollers aren’t something I would recommend for daily use. It is a lot of heat, concentrated directly on the hair strand, BUUUUTTTT, they are so amazing for a quick volume-fix. And big hair matched my outfit, so…
After letting the rollers cool completely, I omitted my usual hairspray step and let Dressed Up work it’s magic. My hair felt smooth, without compromising volume. I kept feeling like it actually looked too nice- I like a little grit, so I might throw in a little bit of Undressed next time. But the Mister liked it and it was good dancin’ hair.
>>> NEW WASH + HAIR BALM: AIR DRIED TEXTURE
They had me at “air dry” with Hair Balm. This next look is going to be my new every day.
For this messy texturized look, I simply washed with New Wash, towel dried, worked one pump of Hair Balm throughout my hair and separated into pigtail sections. I then simply made two twisted buns at about ear level and let dry. I chose this method on a Sunday, which allowed me to lounge around all day with the buns- if you are able, this method also works well to sleep in the buns or blast them with a blowdryer for a couple of minutes to set the wave.
After lounging with the buns all day, I took em out and shook out my hair. I am obsessed. I didn’t have to add any additional product or primping and was able to leave the house within moments of taking out my Princess Leia twists. My hair felt alive.
>>>NEW WASH + UNDRESSED: ARTFULLY UNDONE
Did I hear you say that you want completely effortless, sexy- messy 2nd day looking hair? I thought so. Me to. Well, let me introduce you to Undressed.
Simpliest, sexiest texture must have: Undressed
So, for every one who has ever sat in my hair chair and said you wanted beach waves or slept-in texture and I told you B+B Surf Spray plus Brilliantine were the magic potions, I did not mean to lie to you. It wasn’t a real lie. It was old information. Now you only need 1 product. And it’s better. You literally just spray it in. And let it dry. And you are done. And it looks like you just got your hair messed up the right way if ya know what I mean. Wink Wink.
Also, the packaging is just so cute and magically matches my retro bathroom. My shower caddy is super thrilled to eliminate the 600 products I used to keep in my shower. Say goodbye to the pile of products under the sink and say hello to beautiful simplicity.
I’d like to take a second to mention that I am not being paid by Hairstory to promote their product. I’m just really pumped on it and thought I should spread the love. I will check back in after about a month or so of use on myself and models.
