California. You are just too damn good to us. Whenever shit gets stressful, my husband and I pack up the car and head up the coast for some fresh air, exploration and mind-clearing beauty. This time, he shined up the whip and we cruised up the coast to the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo. We had been there together once before and I have visited once for a friend’s birthday since. It was time to head back. Apart from it’s stunning location, it is also a vintage tack-filled, gaudy resort and a little fun is what we both needed.
There has been so much rain this year, so the drive was filled with green plants, colorful blooms and flowers lining the freeways, cliffs and hills.
The first stop along the way was at historic Eat at Joe’s in Redondo Beach. It is the perfect greasy spoon breakfast spot and my pancake-lovin’ man was so stoked on their pancake sandwich breakfast. After fueling up for the ride, we bounced on up the coast, taking the long way to take in the stunning ocean views and quaint beach towns along the way.
After our slow cruise up the coast, we checked in, took a walk around the property and had a quick drink by the pool. The whimsical and vibrant decor of the hotel highly contrasts the surrounding mountains. Everything at the Madonna is bright, enchanting and trimmed in gold, surrounded by the subtle colors of nature. I was also dressed in whimsical, vibrant decor and trimmed in gold 🙂
swim: vintage, coming soon to Goldstruck Goods
The winding staircases led us to our room for the night, the Tall and Short. This room was perfect for us! If you are unaware, I am 5’3″ and my husband is 6’4″. The whole room was pink and gold, with holographic wallpaper and pink carpet to match.

Once we had our fair share of strolling around and exploring the room, we got dressed up and headed to the bar for a couple of drinks.
I had 2 outfits I wanted to wear for the night hahaha, so I wore 1 look for drinks, then switched it up for dinner. I am so grateful I married a man who totally understands my need for multiple costume changes and hotel room photo shoots. We changed it up, head back down to the Gold Rush Steakhouse for an insanely tasty dinner and people watching.

Thanks to some party favors from a friend, the evening got pretty trippy. How’s that for super-vague drug reference?! 😉
The following morning, my pancake-loving man needed more pancakes so we headed down to the coffee shop of another badass meal and tons of coffee. Our morning was spent by the pool as we made plans to cruise down the coast to our next stop.
Before our trip, I swung by my favorite local Long Beach shop, Make Collectives. I was there for a mega- fun watercolor workshop and left with the perfect pair or vintage black 501’s- I’ve been on the hunt!, a bitchin bolo, sweet little white romper and this SUPER FUCKING RAD vintage 80’s bikini. I had met the shop owner of this amazing spot in a business class a few years back and have frequented her shop ever since. Every time I step in there, I leave with something lust-worthy.
Kat has an insane eye for vintage and she and the wonderful babes who work for her curate the store with a hand-picked mix of vintage and new clothing and accessories. I love it! They also have the best record selection and a rad men’s section with brands like The PosterList, who make the best tees my husband and I both love. I should warn you… I have never stepped foot into Make without purchasing at least one thing for myself or gifts for others. From sage bundles to vintage to that perfect necklace for mom. Unlike most small, local boutiques, Make Collectives prices are super reasonable and the staff is friendly AF.
Like I said, I was there for a watercolor workshop and ended up leaving with treasures. The shop manager, Haley knew I was coming for the workshop and had a few pieces set aside for me- how good is that?! She was spot on with her choices. Seriously, I don’t think I would’ve tried this suit on since on the hanger, the bust looked large ( Im a 32A ) but she assured me it’d fit like a glove and she was right. Guess what guys…. they have another version of this suit in the shop now! Go get it!!! It’s a strapless one-piece. So good. This bikini is mega flattering and holds the girls up and the belly in.
Once we had our fair share of time at the pool, we packed up our bags and made our way back down the rocky, beach lined highway… Follow along on Part 2 of this blog post, headed your way later this week…
