Happy New Year buds!!!! 2017 was a huge year for change around here… Having just moved from California to Chicago, I not only have a new city to navigate but also a lot of new weather to get used to. Fall was beautiful and filled with color…. Now it’s winter’s turn. Apparently it is extra cold for this early in the season in the Midwest and East Coast this year. Perhaps ignorantly, I am still in some sort of fairy tale, dancing around in the snow and enjoying the snuggly nights in. But I know the reality is coming. Chicago is particularly grey and windy and from what we hear, it gets pretty daunting mentally. Having never experienced this, I am going to do what I can to prevent the winter blahs the one way I know how… playing dress up.
During a recent thrifting trip I found a brand new Anne Taylor Loft polka dot skirt ( with tags!), which I will be using in all 3 looks. This flow-y little number is an odd choice for winter, I know. But with a little pattern mixing and a lot of layering, it’s a very versatile piece. The silhouette and material is very uplifting, which I find perfect for cold weather. It brings a little hope and a reminder of warmer days ahead.
Most of these pieces are things I have worn a handful of times or styled with so it’s their turn to go to a new home. I’ll be adding links to where the items can be found, either on my Depop or Etsy account or the brand’s website it it is a new item. Feel free to message me!
As sick as I am about talking about the weather, it is relevant to this particular blog topic. It. Is. Fucking. Cold.
I come from a place where 60 degrees feels incredibly chilly, so 6 degrees is mind-blowing. This first look was pieced together and shot last week, when there was just a bit of snow on the ground and it was “starting to get cold”. This day was easily handled without tights or long johns under the skirt and I was able to grab my leather jacket to toss over a big cozy sweater rather than the big ol parka. As it was the week before Christmas, I was headed to a dressy little brunch with friends so I wasn’t battling the elements too much.

Within one week, the weather shifted from kinda cold to downright fucking freezing. Our official winter welcome is here. This look required a bit more creativity with layering and surprisingly kept me very warm throughout the day. It’s got a real preppy winter wonderland feel, which slightly reminded me of Steffy a la @steffyspancs . Although our aesthetics aren’t generally similar, I ADORE hers and though I end up styling myself a bit preppy often, it always shocks me when I love it. This sweater was stolen from my dad’s closet ( shhhhh…. don’t tell )and just sold on goldstruckgoods.com. I do have a couple of other similar styles listed if you’re lookin for cozy festive wool.
This move has forced me to learn so much more about layering and the magic of fleece-lined tights. Urban Outfitters has these ones: HERE on sale for $5 right now! I just added 2 more pairs to my cart as I looked them up to link em.
glassess: cheap, non prescription pair I found at Nordstrom Rack // sleeveless turtleneck: older style by Knot Sisters that I absolutely LIVE in. I don’t believe they produce this style anymore, but you can find turtlenecks at any thrift shop and just cut the sleeves off for un-stuffy layering if you’d like! I just found a GAP BODY one and a cropped stripe turtleneck from H&M at Salvation Army this week. // sweater: Goldstruck Goods vintage // skirt: pick it up on DEPOP // tights: Out From Under Urban Outfitters // boots: an oolllllllddddd style from Seychelles– they have very similar styles on their site now.
Admittedly I chose a very uneducated decision on shoes for this day of running errands. Shortly after we took these shots, I ran right inside and collected a pair of simple Frye boots and sox. And a huge puffy coat. It was a high of 7 degrees that day. But let’s pretend for just a moment that it was like 20 degrees.
For a brave attempt to pull off a skirt in this type of weather, I layered it over a vintage sweater dress. Hate to toot my own horn, but it was brilliant! The sweater dress and skirt are both a little oversized on me so there is ample room for layering without feeling like a Michelin tire man. With the exception of my bad shoe choice pictured and decision to forgo a hair wash that day, this paired together pretty nicely with a fun pop of blue that accentuated the blue in the beaded detail of the sweater dress.
Anyone have any winter layering tips? I’m all ears on this one!
